CHAPTER FIVE

“Don’t look now, but Mom is headed this way,” Jonah observed.

Michelle glanced across the yard. Candace and Melanie were on a direct course with their location. Michelle began to fidget with the beer bottle in her hands.

“You’ve got it bad,” Jonah snickered.

“What?”

“You. Why are you so nervous, Shell? I thought you and Mel were like best friends?”

“Yeah. We are. Only I am fool enough to fall for my best friend. Take my advice, Jonah. Stay single, it’s easier.”

“Oh? So, you two are together now?”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean not exactly? Exactly what are you?”

“Friends on a date at Mom’s reception.”

Jonah laughed. “Smooth, sis,” he whispered just as Candace and Melanie reached them.

“Hey,” Melanie greeted the pair nervously, taking a sip of her beer to calm her nerves.

Michelle smiled. “I see that Mom hooked you up already,” she said.

Melanie choked. Michelle suddenly felt herself relax. Melanie was obviously equally nervous. It was silly, now that Michelle took a second to examine the situation. Melanie looked at her and Michelle felt her fears instantly quieted. She loved Melanie. Plain and simple; she did. And, there it was as clearly as anything ever had been. Melanie loved her. Michelle knew it. She’d known it for longer than she’d allowed herself to admit. What was she so afraid of? No one had ever made Michelle feel as special, cared for, and loved as Melanie; no one except Michelle’s family. There was no turning back now. And, Michelle finally admitted to herself at that moment that she had no desire to turn back. She wanted Melanie in her life, not just as a friend and a companion, but as a partner and a lover.

“I meant the beer,” Michelle clarified her statement.

“Actually,” Candace began, “you’ll have to give your sister the credit for that one. I’m just the GPS,” she said. Candace winked at her daughter.

“Candy!” a voice called across the yard. Candace groaned.

“Gollum making you nuts?” Michelle guessed. Candace groaned again. “Just sic J.D. on him. She’d be more than happy to throw him back into Middle Earth somewhere.”

Candace chuckled. “I might let her.”

“There you are!” Jason hurriedly approached Candace.

“Why do I feel like prey?” Candace muttered. “Jason… Enjoying yourself?”

“Working,” he replied dryly. “Come on, The Times is here.”

“Oh yes, a tour of Granddad’s home,” Candace replied.

“You agreed.”

“So, I did,” she responded. “I’m sorry kids. Duty calls.”

“Give ‘em hell, Governor Reid,” Michelle teased.

Candace rolled her eyes and started to lead Jason back toward the house. “What did she say?” he asked Candace.

“Come on, don’t want to keep anyone waiting,” Candace said.

“Candy, did Shell just call you Governor Reid?”

“Shell calls me a lot of things,” Candace replied. She looked over her shoulder and grinned at Michelle.

Michelle waved to her mother playfully. “Ha-ha, I’ll bet he’s freaking out,” she laughed.

“What just happened?” Jonah asked.

“Yeah. Why is your mom smirking like a cat that ate the canary?” Melanie wanted to know.

“Oh, God! Whatever you do, don’t ever ask my mom that!”

“Why not?” Melanie wondered.

“Jinx,” Michelle replied.

“Jinx?” Melanie was confused.
